Thanks for this info and the pics. I am painting my van using a interlux marine enamel (red) it's coming out great (sprayed hplv) I am going to do the top in tremclad black was wondering about air temperature. Yout story and pictures are sure encouraging. I have found the same thing, painting cares is really over rated, it all in the prep work. But you know if all you need to do is make the care look better, paint really covers a lot of issues. If it's does not have to be polished, home painting can be very forgiving. As 69 charger has said, thinning is important to get the paint to lay flat, the marine paints have a special thinner or brushing fluid that helps the paint layout flat and give you a great finish. Go for it, paint !!!!

8-10 coats!! HELL, thats a of a lot of paint! celly reduced 1:1 rolls on with a 4" high dens foam roller and two coats is more than enough to take a 1200, 1500 and 2000 cloursand, also celly can be colour matched to the rest of your vehicle so you dont have to repaint the whole darn thing. yes, the paint/ thinners themselves are more expensive at the outlay stage, but i'm not painting the whole car only the areas I need to so i'm probably gonna break even eventually!!

Hi,
The Rustoleum gallon can says next coat can be applied after 24 hours of dry time. Any ideas on how to reduce the drying time? Are there activators available for Rustoleum Enamel?
Interest is in repainting car.
Thanks much! --Mark

I just tried this and got a ton of bubbles, they would pop and then it would run down the side of the car. Luckily I jus tried one panel and was able to wipe off the paint with a rag. I tried pressing hard and light and nothing helped. I ended up using paint gun anyway. Is there a particular brand of foam roller that works well?

I have some unknown to me (previous owner) brand of primer. I am getting ready to do some bondo work. Does it matter what kind of primer I use over the bondo?
Thanks

I'd also suggest using a primer made by the same manufacturer as the topcoat (e.g., Rustoleum). An issue would come into play if the Primer were Acrylic based while the Top Coat were Oil based.

as long as you are able to allow sufficient time for the paint to dry, you can drive it around. You will have to wash, dry, clean and mask the car all over again though... a time investment that actually is much longer than the time it takes to apply the paint. Dont forget if you've removed your turn signals, brake lights etc...I had to do this myself and i'd really avoid it if at all possible.

I used Rustoleum Stops Rust. Rustoleum Professional looks nearly the same per the MSDS.
Here are the links:

Rustoleum Professional High Performance Protective Enamel: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=130

If there's rust what is a good way to fix? Sand it down? I have some stuff I bought that's in a blue bottle that turns the rust kinda white looking and supposedly makes it paintable, any thoughts on this? I'm thinking of using your method to paint and old truck I'm fixing up to drive, I keep getting quotes from $4000 to $7000 to paint it, I just wanna drive it and have it look nice, not show it at World of Wheels ya know.

In my opinion, it is best to grind/sand the rust away, then bondo , then primer, then paint the area. It has been my experience that the "rust converter" products create a plasticoat type of seal, but that the seal is not at all permanent.
It does take a bit longer to grind/bondo/primer/paint, but not a whole lot longer -- especially if the rust does come back.

I was just wondering if it is possible to wet sand and then buff (polish) the basecoat BEFORE applying the clearcoat....I’ve tried looking all over the net for answers but I can’t find anything anywhere which leads me to believe that no one has done it or at least no one has spoke about it.....I was messing around with an old car and painted the fender with a black basecoat and then wet sanded and buffed it with a circular polisher...the finish came out amazing, and then I was going to clear it but haven’t got around to that yet...

Hey, just a question. Why couldnt you just spray the rustoleum or brightside paint on and avoid having to master the roller + brush method?? seems like you would still gain the benefit of the cheap paint but not have to worry about brush marks??????
